A health journal for your horse.

You write down what you did and what you saw. HorseDex keeps it, and shows the record back to you over time, for one horse or for several.

The pages

One page for each thing you do.

Four pages along the bottom, with Trends at the top beside search and the diary. Hide a page you never use, or put the rest in your own order. Land, for yard jobs and paddocks, is there when you switch it on.

The Log page: today's two entries for Bramble, a Log an entry button, and the last seven days below

Log

Your day, first

Log opens on today and the last seven days, with a Log an entry button for the form. Exercise, feed, how they were in themselves, weights and body condition, who came out and what the vet prescribed.

  • Nothing is compulsory, and a new journal asks about very little until you switch the rest on.
  • Exercise, Lesson or Competition, and a competition can carry a class, a placing and a score.
  • Share a ride from Equilab as a GPX file and it is added to that day's exercise.
The Care page: an open lameness episode above the care register, with the farrier due in nine days and what the last visit cost

Care

The care register

Farrier, dentist, physio, vaccinations, worming: when each was last done, what it cost, and when the next falls due on the interval you chose for that horse.

  • A reminder about a month ahead and a chaser a fortnight before, so it is in the diary before they are full.
  • An illness or injury kept as one thread: when it started, updates as it goes on, and an end when there is one.
  • A holiday cover sheet for whoever looks after your horse: contacts, feed, hay, rug size and tack, medications and anything due.
The Spending page: September's total, with bedding and hay each showing roughly when they run out

Spending

What it really costs

What it all costs, month by month: livery, bedding, hay and what each visit came to.

  • The month can start on your payday rather than the first.
  • Roughly when your hay will run out, with the workings a tap away.
  • What a visit cost, given on the Care page, is counted here too.
The Plan page in its month view: September laid out with box rest, lessons and a day off

Plan

The week, and the month ahead

Answer a few questions once and HorseDex builds the week around whatever you have already booked. The month view shows bookings, exercise and care due at a glance.

  • Bookings can repeat weekly or fortnightly, and a single date can be skipped or moved without touching the rest.
  • A reminder can say "Farrier tomorrow morning".
  • Box rest keeps the week clear for as long as the episode says.
The Land page: a list of yard jobs, Harrowing, Overseeding and Muck heap emptied among them, each never recorded yet and on its own interval

Land

The yard, too

Yard jobs rather than horse ones: harrowing, overseeding, the muck heap, topping, fertilising, fence checks, water troughs and ragwort, each with its own due date and ticked off the same way as Care.

  • Which horse is in which paddock, and the rotation between them.
  • Tap a job's history to change a date or note, or delete one ticked by mistake.
  • Off until you switch it on: answer "Do you manage your land?" at setup, or later in Settings → Your pages.

And that is all

Five things HorseDex does not do

It never tells you what is wrong

No score, no grade, no verdict. Your notes sit side by side and you are the one who reads them. Diagnosis is your vet's work, not an app's — the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 reserves it to them.

There is no laminitis score, no colic checker and no lameness grade, and there is not going to be one.

No account

No email address, no password, no sign-up, nothing to verify.

No server

Your records are written to your own device, and synced through your own iCloud, on by default — off in Settings if you'd rather. Never through a server of ours.

Nothing collected

No analytics, no tracking, no advertising and no third-party kits of any kind.

Free, no in-app purchases

Nothing held back behind a paywall, a subscription or a one-time unlock.

iPhone, iPad and Mac

The same journal on every screen you own.

Synced through your own iCloud, never through a server of ours.

From the people testing it

What testers have said so far

I LOVE how intuitive and flexible HorseDex is. I can choose to track exactly what matters to my mare without cluttering the app with the things I don't need. It lets me set reminders for appointments and share whole entry logs with vets or physio if needed. Seriously, it makes keeping an accurate history so easy!

I've had the privilege to be testing the HorseDex app and I am so impressed! As someone who is extremely forgetful and has two horses, I was constantly forgetting what happened each day with which horse- I now have an app whereby it's easy to track absolutely everything. It's completely solved a real life problem for me. I'm so impressed that I can even use the app on my iPad which syncs with my phone. Highly recommend for any horse owner.
